LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – North Las Vegas Fire Department say an elderly woman is dead after suffering severe burn injuries.

NLVFD responded to a structure fire on Tuesday, Jan. 7 near Clayton and Washburn where a 92-year-old woman was found in critical condition.

The elderly woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.

According to firefighters a pot was found on the stove.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the identity of the woman.

North Las Vegas Fire Department would like to remind residents that cooking is the leading cause of house fires and cause of injuries.

Officials recommend the following precautions to cook safely.

  • Keep flammable items like kitchen towels and oven mitts away from the stovetop.
  • Turn pot handles towards the back of the stove.
  • Never throw water on a grease fire, instead smother it by covering the pot with a lid or cookie sheet.
  • Wear short or tight-fitting shirt sleeves.
  • Store a fire extinguisher rated for kitchen fires within reach.
