LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The first day of a two-lane closure for F1 infrastructure construction on the Las Vegas Strip appears to be a smooth one.

FOX5 checked out the area during the evening rush hour and didn’t see any traffic troubles.

Two lanes have been closed on Las Vegas Boulevard southbound and will remain that way 24-hours a day as crews build grandstands for the F1 race in November.

Last year, the area turned into a traffic trouble hotspot, with the lanes also reduced for the grandstand construction. The lane closures resulted in traffic backing up into the Las Vegas Boulevard Flamingo intersection, and cars had difficulty crossing on a green light.

But the big difference between then and now is, crews were doing repaving work for a new F1 track last year. That work will not have to be done for several more years.

Last year, the Culinary Union was concerned about all the Strip workers who were sitting in traffic due to F1 construction.

“If workers are on their way to work and have to spend 45 minutes in traffic then they should get paid for that time,” said Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge.

That’s an issue the Culinary Union brought up last year as well. The Culinary Union said it will watch how traffic situations play out this year.
