LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The family of a man killed in a car crash Saturday night is calling for stricter driving laws after police said the driver who hit him was suspected of being impaired.
Sarita Moreno said she is still in shock after losing her husband, Julio, in the crash. She described him as a loving father and devoted husband.
“He was a very loving father, devoted son, devoted husband. He loved everybody. He would do anything for anybody. He’d take the shirt off his back if we had to,” Sarita Moreno said.
Police suspect the driver who hit Julio’s car was impaired. The driver, 41-year-old Rogelio Camacho, has a criminal record that includes past charges of reckless driving, domestic violence and a DUI conviction from 2014. Camacho was taken to the hospital after the crash and eventually booked into the Clark County jail on reckless driving and DUI charges.
Fabian Moreno, Julio’s brother-in-law, said the family wants to see change in state driving laws.
“How many more lives do we have to go through. How many more families have to be destroyed for something to happen,” Fabian Moreno said.
The family believes stricter penalties need to be put in place for the safety of Las Vegas residents.
“We are here to live. We love this city and yet there’s no change at all,” Fabian Moreno said.
Sarita Moreno said she wants lawmakers to implement measures to prevent deaths from impaired driving and other traffic violations.
“I want them to implement something to stop all these killings from drunk driving, running red lights, anything. You’re taking someone’s loved one away,” she said.
