LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The grandfather of a 10-year-old boy killed while crossing a street near Charleston and East Fremont last week is speaking out, calling on the city to improve road safety at the intersection.

Simeon Young was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in front of his mother’s apartment. His grandfather said Simeon had been outside playing with friends and told his mother he would be right back. His mother was inside at the time with her four children.

The grandfather, identified as Tray Riley, said the driver was not impaired and now has to live with the crash for the rest of his life. He said the loss has devastated his family, but his heart also goes out to the driver.

Calls for crosswalks, flashing lights

Riley said he wants the city to be more proactive — not reactive — when it comes to road safety. He described the issue as a community problem requiring action from both residents and city leaders.

“It hurts, it hurts really bad… because the whole thing to it is that we can look up and down the street here and it’s not even safe for adults, let alone children… and why is it that a child or an adult has to lose their life before something’s done about that,” Riley said.

During a live report at the scene, a FOX5 crew observed at least 10 people crossing through the roadway in approximately 10 minutes. Riley said the nearest crosswalks in either direction are several hundred feet away. With apartment buildings on one side and stores directly across the street, he said, people cross mid-block because it is the most direct route.

Riley is calling for flashing lights and additional crossing options at intersections like this one. He is urging officials to act before another family is affected. The family is grappling with the loss, saying that Young was a loved child with a bright future ahead. They are planning on getting a memorial and funeral service to celebrate his life.
