Father of child, sole survivor of Las Vegas crash shares update on recovery

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The 9-year-old sole survivor of a northeast Las Vegas crash last month is on the road to recovery.

For the first time, FOX5 is hearing from her father, Alvin Allen, who said his daughter was recently flown from UMC to a rehabilitation center in Reno.

Allen describes the 2 a.m. phone call that changed his life, forever.

“I was told that my ex-wife had died in a car crash, and that my daughter was in the hospital in critical condition, and that I needed to get to Vegas as fast as possible,” he said.

According to Metro Police, the crash happened near Carey Ave. and Pecos Road on the evening of June 10.

Police say speeding was a factor. The driver, the 9-year-old’s mother, lost control of the car before hitting the curb and colliding with a power pole. Another woman was in the passenger seat and both died in the crash.

But, after being pinned in the backseat, the 9-year-old survived.

“I just was praying my whole way, to make sure that my baby would be alright,” Allen said.

Among other serious injuries, Allen said his daughter’s leg was amputated.

After spending weeks at UMC, the 9-year-old was flown to a rehabilitation center in Reno, where Allen lives. He said it was her first time on a plane.

“Mentally, she’s very strong,” he said. “She misses her mom, but that’s to be expected.”

Allen said it is unclear how long she will need to stay in physical therapy.

The 9-year-old’s Cousin, Shirlise Castille, set up a GoFundMe for the family.
