LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The FBI released 2023 crime in the nation statistics, and FOX5 took look at Las Vegas numbers.
According to Metro’s statistics in 2023 and 2022, total offenses increased. In 2023, there were 133,718 compared to the 131,884 offenses in 2022.
That’s about a 1.4% increase.
Homicide crimes decreased about 12 percent in 2023. Statistics show there were 146 incidents. In 2022, there were 167.
For animal cruelty, crime decreased about 20 percent with 125 cases. There were about 156 the year prior.
Meanwhile drug and narcotic offenses went up significantly, about 10 percent, in 2023 with 9,863 offenses. In 2022, there were 8,935.
FOX5′s Jaclyn Schultz previously spoke to Metro about the rise in narcotics and drug tests. She spoke to Captain Steve Connell.
“We are making arrests for drugs to prevent drug related violence. We are taking the weapons out of the hands of potential offenders before they use them,” said Captain Steve Connell in an email to FOX5.
“Sheriff McMahill wants the tourist corridor safe. We have pushed hard from the start of the year to make his vision happen,” he said.
Leaders also launched a “Edged Weapon Initiative” that netted 300 arrests so far, Connell said in 2023.
Police tell FOX5 they track trends week-by-week to see what other areas or crime trends need more patrols or intervention for prevention.
