LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A large fire in an exterior storage area near 2685 N. Nellis Boulevard near Carey Avenue prompted a second-alarm response Friday night and temporarily shut down part of Nellis Boulevard, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

If you saw the glow or smelled smoke in the area, here’s what crews were dealing with.

Clark County firefighters were dispatched at about 9:03 p.m. after reports of smoke and flames coming from a large exterior storage area, with utility poles and lines also involved.

Fire officials said crews arrived at a significant fire that was roughly the size of a city block, with heavy fire involvement throughout the area.

Because of the intensity and scope of the blaze, the incident was immediately declared a defensive operation, meaning crews focused on containing the fire from safer positions instead of making interior pushes. Firefighters stayed in that defensive mode for the duration of suppression.

With the size and complexity of the incident, the response was upgraded to a second alarm.

To keep the area safe and support fire operations, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department closed Nellis Boulevard.

Assisting agencies included Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, the North Las Vegas Fire Department, Nellis Air Force Base, Southwest Gas, and NV Energy.

Fire crews ran into several issues that complicated the response, including a limited water supply, restricted access to the fire area, exposed overhead power lines, and moderate wind conditions.

To overcome those challenges, crews deployed multiple 1,000-foot supply lines and about 3,000 feet of hose lines. Officials said firefighters also used master streams from two truck companies, attacking the fire from elevated positions.

Knockdown was reported at about 10:04 p.m.

Firefighters conducted primary searches and confirmed no victims. Officials said crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to multiple nearby structures.

Damage is estimated at $500,000, fire officials said.

There were no reported injuries. The cause remains under investigation.
