First responders get new tool to help mothers, newborns during emergencies

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — First responders have a new tool to help moms and newborns during emergencies.

The Nevada EMS for Children program handed out these baby medical wraps to ambulance agencies across the Las Vegas Valley. The wraps allow moms and babies to be transported together while helping them bond, regulate the baby’s body temperature, and more.

Doctors say this is a critical tool for first responders to have when responding to a birth that’s happened outside the hospital.

“It allows bonding to continue and to be able to keep that baby warm, to allow mom to be able to feed that baby, and it really helps promote that transition that happens,” said Dr. Lloyd Jensen with Sunrise Children’s Hospital.

Doctors say in many cases, first responders can’t allow the mom to hold her baby because she’s considered a patient herself.
