LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — July 18, 1912, is a tragic date in Northern Nevada.
On this day in history, a flash flood wiped the tiny mining town of Mazuma in Pershing County. Eight people died in the waters.
Survivors reported a ten-foot wall of water heading upstream from Mazuma through the Seven Troughs Canyon.

To make matters worse, the flood wiped out a cyanide plant and sent countless gallons of the poison into the water. Attempts to warn residents in mazuma failed, and the flood wiped out nearly a tenth of the town’s total population.
