LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Mail theft is on the rise, and FOX5 is getting answers about where it is happening the most.
Data from the United States Postal Inspection Service shows the top five zip codes for mail theft complaints in the Las Vegas Valley in one year:
- 89131: 140
- 89135: 139
- 89149: 114
- 89052: 108
- 89118: 108
Among the top three zip codes, November and June see the most complaints.
Nearly every zip code in the valley saw a handful of complaints. A resident of an apartment complex near Russell Road and Nellis Boulevard says her mail was stolen three times in one year.
“I just want to see my mailbox get fixed so I can start getting my meds, more than anything that’s what worries me,” she says.
She says mail theft has put a barrier between her and her autoimmune disease medicine, proving that the effects of mail fraud can go further than the invasion of privacy.
“I really need my medications, and this has added a lot of stress for my health,” she says.
The United States Postal Inspection Service is the lead investigative agency when it comes to mail theft.
FOX5 has reached out to them to ask what those investigations look like, and why they think certain zip codes have been hit the hardest.
