LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – People across the Las Vegas Valley have expressed concern about the amount of time it takes community mailboxes to be repaired following a break-in.
After FOX5 reported on the zip codes seeing the highest number of mail theft complaints, viewers reached out with issues about their community mailboxes.
For Henderson resident Suanne Demo, getting her mail used to mean a few feet walk down her driveway. After her community mailbox was broken into in May, Demo said she’s been forced to pick up her mail at the post office.
“It’s hard being a senior having to go out and do this, I don’t have any help,” Demo said. “It’s all in this neighborhood, I’ve heard so many people say, ‘Well, my mailbox was broken into too.’”
Higgins lives near Horizon Ridge and Green Valley, but it’s not only happening there.
Over at Wigwam and Green Valley, FOX5 has been told an apartment complex has been hit hard as well.
Residents of the apartment complex say the complex has fenced the community mailboxes off in response.
“When I asked, they said it was because the mailboxes had been broken into numerous times, is what they told me,” apartment complex resident Ted Hanlon said. “It’s sad that it’s necessary. I’ve lived here for 10 years and it broke my heart when I saw it.”
USPS Strategic Communications Specialist John Hyatt said the USPS is not always responsible for community mailbox repairs.
He said if the mailbox is on private property, it’s up to the property manager or HOA to make the repair. However, if it is a USPS maintained community mailbox, the USPS will make the repair.
“Damaged box units maintained by the Postal Service are repaired as soon as possible, dependent on availability of parts or box units as needed,” Hyatt said in a statement.
If you’re unsure about who is responsible, you can ask your mail carrier or visit the post office.
