LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – North Las Vegas first responders engaged in a little friendly competition to encourage blood donations.

The “Battle of the Badges” saw police officers and firefighters go head-to-head to help with the critical need. Held at the Aliante Casino over the weekend, the goal was to collect 100 units of donations.

Organizers from the Red Cross said the need is greatest headed into the warmer months of the year.

“We’re coming into the summer, we’re going to have a lot of accidents, fires, things of that nature that also need blood,” explained Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Southern Nevada. “And donor numbers actually decrease during the summer due to vacation, children being out of school, things like that.”

The Red Cross of Southern Nevada holds two or three donation drives each week. More information about those can be found here.
