LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Federal Trade Commission got more than a million reports of identity theft last year.

Those victims lost more than $10 billion combined. FOX5 wraps up ID Theft awareness Week with advice on protecting information.

The FTC urges account holders to protect all documents with sensitive information. Put birth certificates, social security cards and financial statements in a secure place.

Shred account documents before throwing them away.

Don’t give social security numbers to anyone who calls, texts or emails. Criminals may impersonate government, bank or company representative to try and get information.

Real agents won’t ask for your full social security number, it’s a scam.

Protect information online and on phones with hard to guess passwords. Ass multi-factor authentication for extra security on accounts that offer it.
