LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian will host a free community event Monday, featuring live mariachi music, folklorico dancers and the traditional grito de independencia, the symbolic cry for freedom that commemorates Mexico’s independence.

Families are set to gather at St. Mark’s Square for a night of music and culture, organizers say they want to keep the celebration authentic.

“We’re going to also have Jesus Lopez, who will be the master of ceremonies,” said Grand Canal Shoppes associate general manager Joseline Cornejo. “He is the NHL Vegas Golden Knights master of ceremonies.”

From Las Vegas residents to tourists, hundreds are expected to come together for a night of tradition and a chance for Las Vegas’s growing Latino community to celebrate their roots.

“For us it’s important because we understand that Las Vegas has a very diverse community and we welcome and want everyone to feel accepted, welcomed,” Cornejo said.

As the Hispanic Heritage Month begins, organizers say they hope the celebration continues to grow year after year.

“It’s part of my heritage to me, it means a lot to be able to celebrate tonight, and we also want the community to join us and celebrate with us.”

The celebration begins Monday at 10 p.m. at the St. Mark’s Square inside The Venetian.
