LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Officials broke ground Thursday on the site of a temple that sparked controversy in a Southern Nevada community.
Elder Michael A. Dunn presided over the ceremony at the future site of the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During the ceremony, he prayed for the individuals who would begin work on the temple.
The temple, which was approved in July 2024, was hotly debated by residents of the Lone Mountain area, with conversations over the height of the steeple, the overall size of the complex and other concerns being raised.
Church officials noted that Nevada is home to nearly 200,000 church members in approximately 350 congregations.
