LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As more robotaxi companies expand, one group is pushing lawmakers in different states to pass bills to keep the industry safe.

Multiple companies are now offering rides or are in the testing phase in Las Vegas. The group called SAVE US, or “Safe Autonomous Vehicles Everywhere in the U.S.,” spoke to Fox5.

Officials say that while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does some regulation of autonomous vehicles, there’s no all-encompassing federal law that regulates them.

And says it wants states to pass bills that represent a unified set of regulatory guidelines.

“Different states have taken very different approaches. So, for instance, California has probably the strongest safety regulations in the country in terms of having multiple types of permits that companies have to get one after the other in order to get more vehicles on the road,” said Shua Sanchez, national campaign director for SAVE US.

Technology focus on advanced sensors

The group also wants self-driving technology to focus more on just cameras. Things like radar and LIDAR — that can not only determine how fast an object is moving, but see it clearly.

Also, pedestrians wearing dark clothing at night. Some of the self-driving companies already have that technology.

FOX5 has reached out to different local robotaxi companies for a response. We’re still waiting to hear back.
