Harry Reid International Airport expected to be ninth busiest during Thanksgiving

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Harry Reid International Airport is expected to be the ninth busiest in the nation over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA predictions.

The forecast comes despite a recent dip in tourism to the area. Navigating the crowds could pose problems for travelers unless they prepare in advance.

Experts say booking early morning flights is the best way to avoid big crowds. Travelers who cannot book early flights should have all travel documents ready when reaching security checkpoints.

The TSA advises passengers to watch for liquids in carry-on bags.

“The mistakes we see most at the checkpoint with passengers is carrying liquids that are larger than 3.4 ounces. And so make sure your water bottles are empty. Anything that you need to bring that is over 3.4 ounces, you want to put that under the plane,” a TSA official said.

Travelers planning to check bags should arrive at the airport three hours early. Those without checked bags should allow two and a half hours to get through checkpoints.

Despite activity at airports nationwide, most people will drive to their Thanksgiving destinations. AAA says nearly 90 percent of travelers will go by car.

Just over seven percent will fly, with another three percent taking a bus, train or ship.
