LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – HOV lanes have been a hot topic of discussion ever since the first lane was introduced in Nevada back in 2007 along I-11.

The hours of operation have changed four different times over the course of 17 years. One thing that hasn’t change is the debate over whether HOV lanes do more harm than good.

Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony stated, “They should be opened up to everybody because we’ve all paid our taxes to build these roads, we should be able to use them.”

And that’s exactly what may happen. As Vice Chairman of the Nevada Transportation Board, Lt. Gov. Anthony instructed NDOT to launch a study about the about the feasibility of eliminating HOV lanes.

That three-year study is underway, but Lt. Gov. Anthony told FOX5 that his opinions have not changed since he was on the council.

“Are people changing their driving habits to use the HOV lanew? Is one person calling another person and saying hey let’s go into work together in one car so we can use the HOV lane? I do not believe that’s happening,” the Lt. Gov. said.

He continued, “I’ll tell you I’m speaking for the vast majority of the public when I say those lanes need to be open for all of us to use and this HOV experiment is not working.”

If you want to express your opinion on what NDOT should do, the survey can be found here. It will be active until Dec. 13.
