LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Someone who spent years with former President Jimmy Carter closer to home, is County Commissioner, Tick Segerblom who worked on Carter’s campaign and in the White House with him.
Outside of Washington, D.C., Carter spent decades helping others get into homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Segerblom says Carter should be remembered for the way he lived his life.
“You look at these presidents and where they’ve gone afterwards, and they’ve built these great monuments and they’ve made millions of dollars,” Segerblom said. “He went back to Plains, Georgia, you know, just living the basic lifestyle. Running around the world building houses for poor people. He just lived the lifestyle of a of a true Christian.”
Segerblom says he was drawn to join Carter’s campaign after noticing carter’s tenacity, drive and ability to win over Americans in spite of never hearing of him.
“He was a unknown governor from Georgia who was taking on the big boys when he ran for presidency in 1976 and he just went out there, went to Iowa, went to New Hampshire, went to all these little states and just outworked everybody,” Segerblom added.
The fourth generation Nevada State Representative was in the White House Personnel office for President Jimmy Carter.
All of those years at Carter’s side helped teach Segerblom important lessons about his own tenure in public service.
“Not to exaggerate, but I think honesty really is important and you know, getting hard work and you know, just being willing to take the punches,” Segerblom said.
Segerblom shared with FOX5 he wishes Carter had gotten re-elected because he believed in his vision for our future.
But while he was in D.C., Segerblom says Carter not only had his eye on America, but on all of the grounds at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He says it was just in Carter’s nature.
“He was tough as nails, you know, he drove a hard bargain and he was also a micromanager. He controlled who played tennis on the White House tennis courts,” Segerblom joked. “So he was very into everything, but the main thing was he just was trying to do the best he could do.”
