LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A former teacher is making an impact outside the classroom.
The owner of Sugar and Spice, a chocolate company has opened her doors to help at risk youth.
“I never thought I would get to learn,” said Mason Kevorkian.
However, Kevorkian is learning the ropes of the job force at Sugar and Spice, with the help of the owner Sheri Long.
“My classroom just morphed into a commercial kitchen, and it is still a learning environment,” Long said.
It is an environment the former teacher focuses on being inclusive.
She brings in those who aged out of the foster care system and young adults with intellectual disabilities.
“They need the constant pat on the back, its ok to make mistakes and go out to the workforce and feel confident and make a living for yourself is the ultimate goal,” Long said.
She emphasizes these goals can be achieve by learning the basics.
“We help them with the work experience factor as far as coming to work on time, needing help, asking for help in this kitchen they are learning food handling,” Long said.
Kevorkian, tells FOX5 he is preparing for his next job and if he has any trouble, he will remind himself of the skills he learned at Sugar and Spice.
Long partners with an organization called Empower Us which helps connect at risk youth and those with disabilities with job opportunities.
