LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Henderson City Council has approved new protections for livestock in the city.
Under the new rules, people can no longer sell animals in public without a permit, poison or crush them, sell chicks or ducklings under two weeks old, and must return trapped animals to their owners within 72 hours.
It also allows people in rural neighborhoods to own more kinds of livestock, including horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chicken and roosters.
“These updates reflect the valuable feedback we received from our residents,” said Director of Community Development and Services Eddie Dichter. “We carefully considered community input to ensure these changes strengthen animal welfare and meet the needs of our rural neighborhoods. We’ll continue to assess areas concerning animals to make sure our codes reflect the highest standards.”
The ordinance also incorporates “Reba’s Law,” a state law named after an English Bulldog left to die in the heat in Las Vegas last summer. It allows people to break into cars to rescue animals in danger.
