HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – Months after needing emergency water repairs, homeowners in one Henderson neighborhood want to know how soon they need to pay back the city after they fronted the cost for repairs.
Last summer, residents at the Somerset Park Townhomes near Pabco and Sunset became aware of sinkholes that needed to be immediately repaired.
According to the city the bill was hundreds of thousands of dollars. The city is put liens on the homes, requiring each of the 85 homeowners to pay more than $8,000.
Somerset homeowners still don’t know how long they’ll have to pay back all of the money back because the repayment plan on Tuesday night’s city council agenda was just an informational item so city council could not vote on the proposed repayment plan.
Within the next 10 days, homeowners will get a notice of intent to lien from the City of Henderson, regardless. They’ll then have until the end of March to pay all $8,000. After that, the lien will be placed on their homes.
Tuesday evening, city staff proposed that each of the 85 homeowners have two years to pay all the money back in order to get that lien removed. It would be over the course of eight installments.
The first payment of about $1,000 would be due in August. That’s far better than the one year plan Somerset homeowner Irene Montano originally thought.
“I feel a little relieved that it’s 8 instead of the four so that helps.”
Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero said the two year payment plan is still up in the air.
“We want to make sure that we are being responsible to them and responsible to the public’s money,” said Henderson mayor Michelle Romero.
City councilmember Carrie Cox is pushing for 12 installments over three years.
“There are a lot of residents there that are just making it barely and to add another bill on top of the HOA fees that have increased on top of their mortgages, on top of the responsibilities that they have, it will put them in jeopardy of not being able to remain in their homes.” she expressed.
Montano and the rest of her neighbors say the longer she has to pay, the better.
“Hopefully they will extend it to a 12 but if not at least we have the 8 which is what we were banking on.“ she said.
Henderson city council will vote on either a two year or three year plan at a future council meeting.
