LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Over the last school year, tensions have risen at Pinecrest Academy Horizon Campus.
Particularly from parents trying to pick up and drop off their kids.
One mother, who wanted to stay anonymous, told FOX 5 that it’s taken 30-45 longer to get her children picked up.
“I’m a single mom. I go to work before the sun comes up. I get off work when the sun comes down.” she explained “It is a charter school. There is no bussing provided by CCSD or anything like that. You have one option, pick up and drop off by a parent or guardian of some sort.”
One of many parents that have expressed concern with car loop system at Pinecrest Academy Horizon.
However, most of the blame has been pointed to a business nearby, MAC.BID.
The rental liquidation and auction company came to Henderson a couple years ago, taking over a lot adjacent to the school.
Parents, including our anonymous mother, claimed the business has tried to keep school personnel from using the parking lot, escalating to the point of harassment from MAC.BID employees on certain occasions.
“It’s scary, right? We’re supposed to feel comfortable taking our students to this place and leaving them there for six hours at a time and there’s a business owner right next door that is yelling at parents and students and intimidating our staff. They’re getting frustrated and they’re getting scared.”
On the other side of the argument, MAC.BID’s chief operating officer reached out to FOX 5 to share grievances they’ve had involving parents and personnel tied to Pinecrest Horizon.
The COO referenced multiple instances of reckless driving near the business as well as people parking in spots designated for MAC.BID‘s business per their lease agreement.
All of the contention brought a handful of parents to a city council meeting, pleading for city leaders to make a change.
That caught the ear of Councilman Jim Seebock.
“I’m committed to finding a fair resolution that hopefully we’re all on the same page with because we want those kids to have a great environment and a great school year,” Seebock said.
Following Tuesday’s council meeting, Seebock not only spoke with parents about their concerns but also went out to MAC.BID to speak to the owner about how to move forward.
That effort led to a joint meeting Wednesday morning between city, Pinecrest Horizon and MAC.BID leaders to discuss how to move forward.
Councilman Seebock came out of that meeting a resolution is on the horizon.
“The business, MAC.BID, they are and can make their parking lot available should the school choose to partner with them if they want. The school is offering different ways to move that line along at the parent drop off. Hopefully that reduces a lot of the cars going out into the parking lot and it speeds things up as well,” Seebock said.
“Have a little grace for each other. Just know that the school and the businesses were trying to work it out. They are fully aware of the issues and how it’s making people late. They’re trying to all offer solutions to that.”
