HENDERSON (FOX5) — A Henderson youth football program that was kicked off their practice field mid-season has won state championships and is heading to nationals in Florida.

The Henderson Cowboys were told at the start of 2025 during practice that they could no longer use their field, ending nearly two decades of routine at the location. The Clark County School District made the decision that forced the team to scramble for weeks.

After traveling across town to practice and pleading with the CCSD board of trustees, the team regained a set schedule at Silvestri Middle School.

“Going to another state, flying with your teammates, and competing for a national championship… that’s a huge accomplishment,” said Damon “Coach Drip” Burdon.

Team posts strong season despite setbacks

The Cowboys finished 7-1 with multiple squads bringing home state championships. The team will compete at nationals in Naples, Florida, with kickoff scheduled for December 6 and a full week of games.

The team temporarily moved their field to Acacia Park about 10 miles away after being kicked off their home field. The relocation made it difficult for families to commute and especially hard for kids who bike, with some traveling 45 minutes to get to practice.

“You’re a student-athlete at the end of the day… you’re building characteristics for the rest of their lives,” said Amber Frederickson, a parent.

The team credits Principal Tippett at Silvestri Middle School for advocating to get their field back. Now they are focused on another hurdle: travel costs.

“The only things we can control are energy, effort, and attitude,” Burdon said.

Burdon said the group kept grinding all summer and into December, determined to represent Las Vegas on a national stage and build something that lasts beyond the scoreboard.

“Just the brotherhood and the bond that it’ll strengthen between them and the coaches as well,” he said.

Fundraising for nationals trip

The Henderson Cowboys are raising funds for nationals. Each player has a goal of raising $800, with a team goal of $25,000 to cover airfare and hotels.

Families say any extra donations will be divided evenly to help every player make the trip.
