LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Henderson Police Department is launching its seventh Joining Forces traffic enforcement initiative targeting distracted drivers.

The campaign will run from April 1 through April 19.

As part of Joining Forces, a statewide law enforcement program, agencies will work together to make roadways safer by enforcing distracted driving laws.

Nevada law forbids drivers from using a cell phone or other electronic device at any time while their vehicle is in operation, even when stopped at a red light. Drivers can use a hands-free headset or Bluetooth to make calls while driving. However, talking on the phone should not divert their attention from driving safely.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving encompasses three main types of distraction: taking your eyes off the road, taking your hands off the wheel, and taking your mind off what you’re doing.

Texting or talking on the phone while driving creates visual, manual and cognitive distractions simultaneously, significantly increasing the risk of serious or fatal crashes.

Drivers should plan ahead by setting their devices to automatically respond while driving.

The Henderson Police Department received $174,500 in grant money for enhanced enforcement through the Nevada Department of Public Safety for the 2026 Joining Forces program.
