LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Police in the Las Vegas Valley are kicking off a pedestrian safety campaign with a new grant.
Henderson Police Department’s Pedestrian Safety Campaign started Monday and runs through Oct. 31. Officials say the department received a $174,500 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety to support the “Joining Forces” campaign running through September 2026.
The Henderson Police Department provided the following tips:
For drivers:
- Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks—marked or unmarked.
- Stop well back from crosswalks so others can see pedestrians.
- Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. They are stopped to allow pedestrians to cross the street.
- Remain stopped until pedestrians finish crossing your lane or reach the median.
For pedestrians:
- Use sidewalks and stay clear of traffic.
- Put away phones and earbuds while walking.
- Never assume a driver sees you; make eye contact before crossing in front of them.
- Be cautious at driveways and traffic exits.
- Give drivers time to stop—at 35 mph, it takes about six seconds.
- Cross at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect you
Officials say “Joining Forces” is a multi-jurisdictional and statewide effort to promote roadway safety and increase awareness of Nevada’s traffic laws.
