HENDERSON (FOX5) — Henderson police launched a targeted freeway enforcement campaign last week following the road rage shooting death of an 11-year-old boy on the 215 freeway.

The campaign runs through Dec. 12 and focuses on aggressive driving behaviors on major freeway corridors, including the 215 and I-11, according to police.

“We’ll be closely monitoring major freeway corridors to reduce dangerous behaviors like speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes and confrontational driving,” police said.

Fatal shooting details

Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria, 11, was sitting in the back seat of his stepfather’s vehicle when the vehicle traveling westbound on the 215 near the I-11 merge became involved in a road rage encounter last month.

One vehicle attempted to pass the other using the shoulder and both drivers rolled down their windows and exchanged words. Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, pulled out a gun and fired into the other vehicle, killing the boy with one shot.

Johns is charged with open murder and is currently in the Clark County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Safety message

Henderson Police Deputy Chief Marcos Aguirre urged drivers to exercise patience on the roads.

“Please slow down, stay patient, and look out for one another. This is about protecting lives, including yours,” Aguirre said.

Police are asking drivers to report aggressive driving by getting a vehicle description, direction of travel and license plate number when possible. They advise drivers feeling frustrated to take deep breaths and remain calm.

Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting Henderson police with the targeted freeway operation.
