LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Two Henderson police unions have pulled their prior endorsement of a councilwoman amid drama and uncertainty surrounding the police chief.
Late last week, Chief Hollie Chadwick was placed on leave, according to a City of Henderson spokesperson. Sources tell FOX5 Chadwick was told to resign or be fired with cause.
Supporters of the Chief packed City Council chambers on Tuesday, wearing t-shirts and buttons that said “I Stand With Chadwick.” Many of them were plain-clothed officers.
Councilwoman Carrie Cox also said she was not a fan of how the news of Chadwick’s leave was handled. Cox said she didn’t find out about the Chief being placed on leave until it was reported in the media Thursday.
“I thought that the timing of this should have been another day at a minimum,” Cox said during Tuesday’s council meeting. “I have heard from over 57 members of the Community and from our department with dozens of emails from Thursday to Monday on a holiday weekend. I was dedicated on my phone. My family did not see me and it is my job to do that, so I was grateful to be able to provide just a listening ear as that is all I could do.”
Now, the heads of both the Henderson Police Supervisors Association and the Henderson Police Officers Union said they are disappointed in how Cox handled herself in the wake of the news.
“The Associations believe that the Councilperson has not accurately represented to the media or public her prior knowledge about issues related to the Chief,” the unions said in a joint statement. “Worse, the Associations cannot tolerate statements that have been made by the Councilperson which are intended to divide not just our memberships, but the unions themselves.”
“We do not believe that she represents the best interests of the law enforcement community and she does not speak for our collection opinions about the city’s decisions related to Chief Chadwick,” the unions said.
FOX5 reached out to Councilwoman Cox Thursday afternoon and she provided the following statement:
My focus will always be on serving my constituents and all residents of Henderson. I do not take the responsibility of being their voice on the council lightly.
I have shown consistently that I am a staunch advocate and supporter for our police department and officers. I will always support the men and women of the Henderson Police Dept.
I have earned the Unions endorsements while running for office and while serving on the council.
Me disagreeing with the way the city manager handled the situation with the chief is not an indication of me betraying the unions. I have made no statements intended to divide either the membership or unions. The men and women of the Henderson police department will always have my full support.
