LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Henderson police are conducting a speeding enforcement period this month at intersections with high crash rates, using state grant funding to pay for additional patrol hours.
The targeted areas include Green Valley Parkway, St. Rose Parkway, Stephanie and Horizon Ridge, intersections known for having some of the most crashes in Henderson.
“So we’ve got funding that comes in from the state to focus on specific areas of enforcement, such as driving under the influence, impaired drivers, distracted drivers, speeding enforcement,” said Captain Benson Harper at Henderson Police Department.
The grant money goes to the traffic division to cover overtime costs when officers adjust schedules and work longer hours.
“It’s to staff for overtime. So, so they’ll go out on overtime that’s paid through the state, and they’re out on additional days enforcing traffic laws,” said Harper.
Multi-jurisdictional approach
Henderson police pull data from across the valley, and enforcement operations can involve multiple jurisdictions working with other agencies.
“Again, impaired driving is very, very important for our valley safety as well as our enforcement of speed, seat belts and distracted driving,” said Harper.
Henderson police pull statistics from their crime analysts and compare that to where accidents are happening to make sure enforcement is happening in the right areas.
Residents notice increased patrols
Local residents say they are seeing more police presence during the enforcement period.
“Definitely a lot more cops, especially right here on St. Rose Parkway. I mean, I’m from Henderson, so it’s generally, like, a safe area, but I’ve been noticing a lot more, you know, Henderson police in the local area, for sure,” Jacob Behena said.
Another resident, Quinn Ortiz, said, “I swear, I’ve seen, like, a cop every single day after I get off of work.”
Henderson Police wanted to remind residents that they could report various incidents here.
