LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Southern Nevada, along with much of the Southwest, is under a High Wind Warning this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Wind gusts will blow through the valley at speeds of 50 to 65 mph, causing strong crosswinds, blowing dust and debris, and wind damage. The warning is scheduled to last through Saturday. Clark County has also issued a dust advisory for the duration of the warning, advising that children and older people avoid outdoor activities.
Currently, according to FlightAware, a real-time flight tracking program, 378 flights have been delayed in and out of Harry Reid International Airport. A majority of the flight delays are coming out of Southwest Airlines, which issued a warning to its customers on Friday morning.
No cancellations have been reported yet.
Additionally, NV Energy is preparing for potential outages caused by downed power lines and other service disruptions.
Many closures are also in effect due to the incoming high winds. Organizers announced on Thursday night that First Friday in downtown Las Vegas would be postponed until next Friday, March 8.
The City of Henderson also announced that its 18th annual Bark in the Park event at Cornerstone Park will be canceled. However, the Canine Dog Stars are moving their show indoors at the Black Mountain Recreation Center tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Lee Canyon announced on Friday that it would be pushing its annual youth competition, Little Air and Style, to next Saturday, March 9.
A Winter Storm Warning is also brewing in the Spring Mountain area. The U.S. Forest Service is warning those traveling up to Mt. Charleston, that travel could be difficult and getting stuck is possible. Officials advise potential visitors to check current weather and road conditions before driving up and avoid traveling at all if snow is still falling.
The Gilcrease Orchard’s Blossom Day event, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 2, has also been canceled.
