LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Clark County School District teachers and staff will be able to summon help instantly as school starts up again on Monday.
District employees will be wearing panic buttons, which were presented after police say a student attacked a teacher at Eldorado High School in 2022.
“All the staff member has to do is push the button a certain amount of times. One alarm will make it known that that person needs assistance. And then if you continue to hit it a certain amount of times, then it will put the school into what’s being called now a hold, which basically is a hard lockdown,” said CCSD Police Lt Bryan Zink.
Zink says all district employees are supposed to have the devices on them. For a hard lockdown, lights in the school flash and there will be a loud sound.
“What it does, is once the teachers hear that they know they need to go, they need to secure their classroom door. They need to cover the window. And they need to tell the kids hey, we’re in a hard lockdown, get on the floor,” said Lt. Zink.
Lt. Zink says the panic buttons were used 1,750 times during last school year. Not only for things like fights or weapons, but the panic buttons can also be used for medical emergencies that can quickly bring medical help to a school when needed.
The devices can be activated up to 1,000 feet away from a school, in the event help is needed nearby.
