LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Want coyotes out of your neighborhood? You and your neighbors have to “haze” them, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
Coyotes are native to the Mojave Desert, according to spokesperson Doug Nielsen, but many new residents in the booming Las Vegas Valley are unaccustomed to close encounters with wildlife.
“If they’re visiting your neighborhood, don’t do nothing. Do something,” Nielsen said. “Honk your horn. Be loud. Let him know, ‘you’re not welcome here,‘” he said.
“Hazing” needs to be a community effort to successfully drive coyotes away.
Ways to “haze” coyotes include:
- Honking a car horn
- Blowing air horns
- Yelling
- Shaking a can with coins
- Blowing a whistle
- Throwing sticks or balls
- Spray a garden hose
It’s important to make sure, if you confront a coyote, that they have a way to run away to escape.
Many residents have things in their yards that attract coyotes, and NDOW urges people to clear them: trash, pet food, pets running loose, and even bird seed (which attracts all sorts of wildlife and then attracts predators).
