LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Dozens of volunteers meet a critical need for hundreds of seniors in the Southeast Las Vegas Valley, making sure homebound seniors get much-needed food deliveries straight to their doorstep.
Helping Hands of Henderson, through Dignity Health and St. Rose Dominican Hospital, meets the food needs of about 500 seniors a month, delivering nutritious meals and supplies. The team also provides hundreds of seniors rides for errands or appointments.
The mission proved even more critical as SNAP benefits were halted for weeks amid the federal shutdown. Out of 500,000 Nevadans who rely on SNAP benefits, 31% are seniors or those with disabilities, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
“We see a lot of our ‘golden grocery’ clients that are isolated or they may not be able to get out of their home to go to the store,” said supervisor Cerise McCalister. “All of our seniors are truly grateful for everything and anything that we can do for them. Seniors are often forgotten about,” she said.
Around 50 volunteers pack nutritious foods in bags.
The Robert T. Bigelow Medical Foundation helped donate funds for a vehicle for transportation. The funds also help seniors get protein deliveries, McCalister said.
“Protein is really good for seniors because it helps them maintain muscle mass and prevent falls and just enhance their mobility. So we add things like chicken, yogurt, and eggs to their monthly deliveries to help sustain some of that,” she said.
