LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Flyers for anti-ICE walkouts at Las Vegas schools have been circulating social media this week, following similar demonstrations that have flooded the streets across the nation on Tuesday.
Flyers have listed multiple schools around the valley, all stating that the walk-out will start at 10:30 a.m. and last until 1:11 p.m. Students will be staging the demonstration around the perimeters of their schools, according to one flyer shared with FOX5.
“It no longer matters if you’re a US Citizen. With the behavior of I.C.E., it seems that legality, no longer matters. If you are a U.S. Citizen and are able to show proof, I.C.E. has no jurisdiction over you, and yet, Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed with the perpetrator facing no consequences because he is shielded by the anonymity I.C.E. provides him,” the flyer read.
FOX5 reached out to CCSD about the protest, who said they were aware of the online posts in a statement.
“CCSD encourages students to be active participants in democracy. The District supports all students who are willing to take the time to research important issues and express their opinions civilly and peacefully,” their statement read. “CCSD must ensure that students are safe during the school day while on campus. Under Nevada law, we must report any student who does not attend or walks out of school as unexcused unless their parent or guardian excused them from school attendance for the day.”
CCSD also emphasized that children in Nevada are entitled to free appropriate public education, irrespective of their immigration status. The school district said they “do not currently check any student’s immigration status and [are] not responsible for enforcing federal immigration law.”
The Board of Trustees adopted a resolution in 2017 reinforcing that policy.
If any federal law enforcement were to show up, CCSD says teachers and staff are required to verify their identity and ask for the reason for their visit before contacting CCSD Police Department.
Similar protests are being reported at schools around the country, including regional cities like Los Angeles and Tucson.
