LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The smoke from the wildfire is causing unhealthy air quality and can seriously affect your health.
FOX5 spoke to a pulmonologist with the Lung Center of Nevada who suggested anyone who is outside should wear a mask.
Dr. Vishist Mehta showed us what a healthy pink lung and an unhealthy dark-colored lung look like.
The darker lung is the most extreme case of COPD also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
Dr. Mehta said the smoke particles we breathe into our lungs have contributed to health issues as smoke particles get deposited into our air sacs.
“Air pollution and in this case from wildfires air pollution can cause patients to have COPD even if they never smoked so days like this are definitely a risk factor,” Dr. Mehta said.
Dr. Mehta said kids, seniors and pregnant women are especially vulnerable when air quality is bad.
He suggested anyone who finds themselves outside to wear a mask.
