LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Three hikers were rescued by Las Vegas Metro Police’s Search and Rescue teams Thursday night, after falling off an icy trail on Mt. Charleston.
LVMPD shared the rescue on social media, saying the rescue occurred around noon on Thursday on the South Loop Trail, near Echo Overlook.
The hikers were coming down a trail when one slipped on ice and slid into a second, knocking them both off the trail. The two then slid down the steep edge of the mountain. The first hiker collided with a tree after falling 100 feet below the trail, causing a severe leg injury.
The second hiker continued sliding another 100 feet before coming to rest on a ledge, without any major injuries. The third victim called 911 while above on the trail.
AIR1 responded and was able to insert a single officer at the first hiker’s location. However, windy conditions picked up, and AIR1 was unable to also plant two other officers to assist.
LVMPD launched a ground operation, which saw four SAR officers and seven Mountain Rescue volunteers hike several miles to conduct a rope rescue for the second hiker.
Windy conditions would die back down, and AIR1 was able to extract the injured victim. The third, uninjured hiker and the ground operation team would all hike back down the mountain safely.
