LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Red Rock Search & Rescue has many resources it relies on when looking for a missing person.
One of its most useful tools is its K9s, according to Kent Nickels, the team’s K9 captain.
Nickels and his wife, Gina, both work full-time and during their off hours, they train and search with their two dogs, Apollo and Finnegan. They do this at their own expense.
“We pay for our own gear, we pay for our gas, we pay for our own cars and equipment,” Nickels said.
Every week, the K9 squad, which consists of several other dogs and handlers, go out in the field and train for an average of four hours. They do this work because they love to help people and they love their dogs.
“We spent three years just to become handlers,” said Nickels.
They also travel to other cities to learn new training and tracking techniques. Apollo is a level 3 search dog, which means he can be deployed nationally.
Red Rock Search and Rescue is a 100% volunteer organization that works solely off public donations. For more information, visit their website.
