Inspirada residents say confusion, crashes happen too often in roundabout

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – If you drive through or live in Inspirada, you know about the roundabout near Bicentennial and Via Inspirada.

This particular roundabout does not look like your typical, circular roundabout as it is shaped like a figure 8. The shape makes driving in the roundabout harder, said Inspirada resident Danny Johnson.

“Nothing makes sense and everyone gets confused,” Johnson said.

Drivers are left making all kinds of turns to get to where they need to go and many times they are not following the signs that direct which way their lane is taking them.

“We came to a conclusion that there is no safe spot in that roundabout,” Johnson said.

Our FOX5 cameras captured a couple of close-call incidents with drivers in the inside lane who zoomed straight when they were not supposed to.

“I was still moving before I realized I was hit. His truck scraped me all the way down,” said Ashley King.

King is eight months pregnant and she tells FOX5 she was recently hit by a driver in that problematic roundabout.

Concerned for her unborn child, King said she was rushed to the hospital.

She tells FOX5 the driver who hit her was in the inside lane going straight.

“I knew immediately he was going to hit me, I knew immediately he was trying to go in a direction he shouldn’t be going. It was pretty scary,” King said.

The roundabout is right in front of the future Inspirada Casino property that is being built. The good news is the city of Henderson tells FOX5 the roundabout will be gone, but that is not good enough for those driving through daily.

“I think better signage that shows each lane that you are in, which side you should be staying it,” King said.

According to the city, the beginning stages of removing the roundabout will start in September. Until then, it is unknown what will be done to keep drivers safe.

FOX5 reached out to Henderson Police Department to find out how many crashes they have responded to in that roundabout since it was built. We will follow this story and bring you the latest when we have it.
