Interim Las Vegas city council member chosen to fill Seaman’s seat

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — An interim city council member has been chosen to fill the seat left by the exiting Victoria Seaman.

According to a social media post, the Las Vegas City Council appointed Kara Kelley as the new interim council member for Ward 2.

Kelley addressed the council Wednesday as one of three finalists, sharing her history, which she called a “quintessential Las Vegas story.”

“My family is much like families who came here at this time and come here today. They were looking for opportunity,” Kelley said. “They found it in the service industry, in the hospitality industry, as maids, as bartenders, as waiters and waitresses or servers.”

She noted that she was a graduate of Valley High School and earned degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The former CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Kelley was named among the top 100 most influential women in Las Vegas history, according to the Las Vegas Centennial Committee.

Kelley will be sworn in Sept. 30. She replaces the outgoing Seaman, who will step down for a role in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
