LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A “desert dumping ground,” near Hollywood and Desert Inn, is headed in the right direction after law enforcement upped patrols in the area.
In September, FOX5 showed you the area was littered with mattresses, appliances, lawn chairs and more.
Founder of Southern Nevada Off-Road Trailing, Mathew Brock, says he’s seen improvement since then.
Bureau of Land Management Officials credit the improvement to upping enforcement in the area.
BLM Chief Ranger for the Southern Nevada District Office, Brad Sones, says they’ve done high visibility patrols in the area, working with community and law enforcement partners to make their presence known.
Sones says he’s not surprised to hear the area is improving.
“It’s showing that the work we’re doing is paying off,” he says.
But now, the problem is spilling onto other areas in the valley, including an area about a dozen miles Northeast, off Lake Mead Boulevard and Pabco Road.
“For folks who don’t know how bad this is, and they’re just like ‘oh, it’s easy, it’s not a big deal,’ it is a big deal, it’s a huge deal,” BLM Public Affairs Specialist John Asselin says.
Asselin says there are ways the community can help.
Anyone who sees illegal dumping should contact BLM or Metro.
Asselin says no one should approach the illegal dumpers, but a description of the vehicle will be helpful for law enforcement.
Additionally, Asselin says BLM’s Southern Nevada District is not budgeted for trash clean up, and that they have a major need for volunteers.
Anyone who wants to get a group together to do a cleanup can reach out to BLM at (702) 515-5000. He says BLM will help coordinate the cleanup.
