LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some wild horses in Mt. Charleston are being stripped of their home.
This comes after numerous incidents of people getting too close and the horses reacting.
For the safety of both humans and horses, FOX5 has learned the herd of seven horses in Kyle Canyon are being removed.
“I didn’t think it was getting that bad. It is getting that bad. It’s just dangerous, ” said Kim Donohue, the CEO of Wild Fire’s Wild and Free Mustangs.
Donohue rescues wild horses at her place in Boulder City. She says the U.S. Forest Service chose her wild horse rescue to place the Kyle Canyon herd in.
The herd of seven, including a new foal, will be rounded up in less than two months.
“Even as a horse person, you don’t touch a wild animal. You don’t go too close to a wild animal. It’s dangerous. Even the most wild, trained horses are skittish,” Donohue said.
FOX5 has reported on wild horses reacting dangerously when humans got too close.
Last year, a girl was kicked in the head. Earlier this month, a boy was also kicked by a horse in Kyle Canyon. FOX5 also reported a video that surfaced on social media which showed a man messing with a wild horse’s face just to take a selfie.
We have also reported on how tourists and residents keep feeding the wild horses, which continue to make them comfortable around humans.
“Mustangs are very food driven that’s all they want and people were feeding them,” she said.
Donohue told FOX5 she was in Kyle Canyon over the weekend to look at the heard, and saw how close the horses got. She shared pictures of cars stopping, and horses that stick their head in to the car.
“The horses are running into traffic. People going 80 miles an hour in a 35 and horses were running out to traffic so they can stick their heads into the car and beg,” she said.
Donohue said they are waiting for the foal to get a little bit older to safely transport the whole herd to Boulder City.
The rescue runs on donations. For those who would like to donate or learn more, visit their social media accounts.
