LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a key part of President Donald Trump’s executive order targeting National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service was unconstitutional.

Judge Randolph Moss said the administration cannot deny funds based on editorial viewpoint. Moss said Trump’s executive order crossed a First Amendment line.

Congress rescinded federal support for NPR and PBS last summer.

The ruling opens the door for public media entities to regain some funds in the future. Public broadcasters could still draw grants from federal agencies given the judge’s ruling.

Vegas PBS President and General Manager Mare Mazur said the ruling is an encouraging development for public media and a meaningful affirmation of the importance of independent, community-serving journalism and education.

Mazur said Vegas PBS remains committed to serving Southern Nevada through education, storytelling and essential services, work that now depends more than ever on the support of the community.
