LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Deobra Redden has pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge during his trial.
Before he pleaded guilty we heard from Judge Mary Kay Holthus and the court clerk who jumped in to get Redden off of the judge.
Deobra Redden was originally facing nine charges but now only one charge remains — attempted murder. Redden pleaded guilty to six charges while two others were dismissed.
The state called Judge Holthus to the stand as its first witness.
Holthus began explaining how she reviews cases and determines probation or sentencing terms based on questioning from John Giordani, a chief deputy district attorney.
The state asks if Holthus has since [prior to trial] realized that she previously revoked his probation. “Correct,” she responds. “Fair to say Giordani asks if it is fair to say 100s if not thousands of criminal defendants who have come in front of you over the years?” asked Giordani.
“I don’t know if I sent him to jail or if was already in custody and he stipulated that he violated his probation. He may have been agreeable to it. I don’t know any of the facts to that, I just ruled you’re revoked,” she said.
Deobra Redden appeared in Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom on January 3 for a sentencing hearing on prior attempted battery charges. He was out of custody at the time of the proceeding.
Holthus testified that during that hearing Redden remained calm.
Giordani asked Holthus what happened when Redden’s case was called initially. “I mean nothing it was just the typical,” the judge said on the witness stand.
Redden failed to appear at the previous sentencing date Holthus testified.
“He averaged one battery, domestic violence conviction a year always. He had 3 felony convictions, he had attempt theft, it was pleaded to attempt theft but started out as a robbery. A classic crime of violence. He had 2 battery domestic violence convictions; he had a battery with substantial bodily harm conviction. He had a gross misdemeanor for malicious destruction of private property which started out as an attempt home invasion, again pleaded down.”
Holthus is seen getting emotional as the attack video played out in court.
“Obviously I hit my head, my family didn’t want me driving and so my daughter wanted to go get a scan…. I had a headache for a few days and the spots where he had pulled out the hair. It was sore where he had pulled out. My back, my arm everything was stiff like you know when you get jostled around,” Holthus testified.
Redden will be back in court November 7.
This is a developing story.
