Las Vegas airport awaits FAA direction on air traffic reduction

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas airport is awaiting direction from the Federal Aviation Administration as reports indicate it is set to see a reduction in air traffic, officials said.

Officials from Harry Reid International Airport stated on Thursday that they are aware of the Federal Aviation Administration’s announcement regarding a planned 10% reduction in air traffic, effective Friday, and are awaiting further information from the agency.

The report comes as sources told FOX5’s sister station, WANF, that the Las Vegas airport is listed on an internal memo indicating a decrease in flights.

Airport officials did not immediately confirm Las Vegas’s presence on the list, but did note that flight delays or cancellations throughout the country could impact local air travel, and encouraged visitors to Harry Reid International Airport to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date flight information.

FAA officials said the reduction in air traffic was intended to maintain safety, as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain during the ongoing government shutdown, which has become the longest in U.S. history.
