LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — About three dozen business owners and residents gathered Tuesday night to discuss the impact of increased parking rates in the Arts District, with many saying the higher fees are hurting their businesses.
The City of Las Vegas raised parking rates from $2 to $4 an hour in October. The community meeting at Taverna Costera restaurant gave stakeholders a chance to develop demands to present to the city later this month.
Business owners report customer complaints
Kristen Corral, co-founder of Tacotarian, said she’s given refunds in the past month to customers.
“I’ve probably had to give ten refunds in the last month to customers who come to pick up food and get ticketed in the to minutes those parking people are quick,” Corral said.
Tacotarian is a grab-and-go restaurant, and customers have raised concerns about the parking costs since the increase took effect.
“I am offering 99-cent tacos on Wednesdays so you are going to come down for a 99-cent taco but pay four dollars to park,” she said.
Group seeks compromise solutions
After three hours of discussion, the conversation grew heated as participants worked toward finding a compromise. However, the group agreed the hourly parking rate should be decreased and the 90-minute minimum for parking should be removed.
“Bare bones here, like four dollars an hour is excessive,” one participant said.
Jeff Hwang, owner of Taverna Costera, said the group was unified in their concerns.
“We are all on the same page that what’s happening now is not good,” Hwang said.
The group also discussed other proposals, including a universal employee parking rate that could be transferred within the same establishment and ending paid parking after 10 p.m.
The business owners plan to present their proposals at a city meeting on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. on Third Street.
