LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As it’s done since about 2005, Moments of Blessings House of Prayer helped the community with a food drive giveaway.

Every Monday the church holds a food giveaway, this week turkeys were on the menu.

Martha Ewell explained what the food giveaway means to her.

“I’d be hungry. We’d be starving,” she said.

Martha Ewell says she only goes to food giveaways when she really needs them. She told FOX5 inflation, for her, is getting worse, not better.

Ewell shared she’s not working and explained her struggles with mental health sometimes gets in the way of her keeping a job. While tearing up in line, Ewell expressed appreciation for the help she gets from relatives.

“I am grateful. I have family that has been there for me. But there are so many people that you see on the streets out here that don’t have that. And they’re struggling with their mental health, and they have nobody to help them,” said Ewell.

Moments of Blessings House of Prayer gets its food from Three Square Food Bank. Three Square is Southern Nevada’s only food bank.

“Las Vegas continues to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. This growth, combined with the recent rise in inflation, has heightened the demand in Southern Nevada,” said Three Square.

Three Square says its annual Map the Meal Gap study showed food insecurity is on the rise and continues to be a top issue for many struggling families.

“The annual study revealed there are 341,480 – or one in seven– food-insecure individuals in Southern Nevada, an increase of 67,050 people since last year,” said Three Square.

It added, “The study also shows that 22% of children in Southern Nevada – or one in five, which equates to 115,520– are living in food-insecure households. This is up from 17.8% in 2023.”

Three Square says the United States Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as limited or uncertain access to enough food to live an active, healthy life.

Three Square says for every $1 given, it can provide up to three meals for hungry families, seniors and children in need. You can donate by visiting the Three Square website.

Anyone who needs food can call Three Square Food Bank’s call center at 702-765-4030, or visit their website.
