LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas City Council has approved plans for Lennar Homes to build on the former Badlands Golf Club property at Alta Drive and S. Rampart Boulevard.
The city council voted unanimously to approve the project and rezoning, with some amended conditions — adding more trees as a buffer between neighboring properties and allowing for debris cleanup on the site before a building permit is issued.
For months, many neighbors have voiced their opposition against the new housing development, citing concerns like traffic, security and school overcrowding in the area.
On Wednesday, the project plan passed unanimously in the city council.
“I think it says a lot that there’s not a room full of neighbors here, which is great. We’ve really worked hard to communicate the best we can. I know that they’re not all happy, but I do hope that they’ll be proud of their neighboring community.” said a representative for Lennar homes at Wednesday’s city council meeting.
The last developer who bought the land back in 2015 sued the city, claiming he was unable to build on it because they wouldn’t approve the zoning.
In December, the city settled that lawsuit for $636 million dollars, which included the purchase price of the property.

That settlement led the city to institute a hiring freeze, and offer a voluntary separation program, where 21 workers have retired.
