LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas City Council has approved the development of a proposed tiny home community during a Wednesday meeting.

FOX5 has previously covered this proposal, which developers frame as a potential solution to the problem of affordable housing.

The proposal for a plot of 50 tiny homes came up for a vote during the meeting and was approved unanimously after councilmembers suggested several amendments.

The homes would primarily be open to seniors.

However, this would only be a drop in the bucket, as the Nevada Housing Coalition predicts 78,000 more homes are needed for Nevadans classified as “extremely low income.”

Before this item landed on the City Council docket, the proposal went through the planning commission, which actually voted unanimously to recommend denial of the plan.

Among their concerns was how the homes would look down the road — they were skeptical of whether tiny homes would hold up years from now.

Part of the solutions presented by developers in Wednesday’s meeting included an increased number of trees and wrought iron fencing along the perimeter, among other beautification efforts.

Rent for these proposed units would be anywhere from $900-$1,000 including utilities, and developers say the units will be fully furnished.

Several seniors gave public comment expressing their excitement for the development.

“We have such a need for this,” one senior said. “And it’s the fastest way, I believe, to solve some of these problems. Because it’s affordable, not only for the person in the building, but for the person who has a need.”
