LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The owner of Made in the Shade was arrested for allegedly defrauding seniors.

According to the Nevada State Contractors Board Steven Adinolfi is facing 21 felony charges for fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses.

Various complaints were submitted in late 2023 which claimed project abandonment after payment was received, but the work was never completed. The NSCB investigated these complaints and validated the claims.

In 2024, Christopher Olson spoke with FOX5 and shared his experience with Made in the Shade after they were hired to build a patio cover.

“They were guaranteed for 115 mile an hour winds and in October 22′ we had 75 mph winds in Red Rock Canyon and two of our 3 covers actually blew completely down. Damaged the house, damaged my swimming pool, damaged my patio and damn near could have killed somebody,”

The NSCB say they found Adinolfi collected more than $350,000 for work that was never done. The board revoked his license.

The Attorney General’s office assisted the NSCB to pursue charges against the alleged crimes.

The board reports they have awarded $408,000 from the Residential Recovery Fund to victims of Made in the Shade.

“There is no disputing the harm caused when a contractor abandons a project after taking large down payments from consumers,” expressed NSCB Executive Officer David Behar. “We are grateful for the work of our investigators, the partnership with the Attorney General’s Office, and most importantly the consumers who came forward.”

Officials say be cautious of common red flags listed below:

  • Demands for large down payments or cash-only payments.
  • Failure to put the terms of a project in writing.
  • No contractor’s license number and/or contractor information does not match the NSCB’s website.
  • Aggressive sales tactics and pushy ‘today-only’ pricing.

Consumers can verify a contractor’s license through the Nevada State Contractors board website. Officials recommend consumers confirm a contractors status is “active” when a contract is signed.
