LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas doctor was sentenced to 27 months in prison for unlawfully distributing opioid medications.

Officials reported on Sept. 30, United States District Judge Cristina D. Silva sentenced Dr. William Alvear.

Alvear’s sentence includes three years of supervised release and must pay a fine of $75,000.

According to records, a federal jury in Las Vegas convicted Alvear in Nov. 2023 for violating the Controlled Substance Act.

Alvear was found distributing Hydrocodone with no legitimate medical reason.

The FBI investigated the case and expressed their concerns.

“By prescribing medically unnecessary prescription medications in exchange for cash payments, the defendant put vulnerable patients at risk,” said Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans for the FBI Las Vegas Division. “The FBI will continue to work with our federal, state, and local partners to find and investigate practitioners in the medical community who target and victimize vulnerable populations.”
